Great Tips for Ranking your Podcast

By:  Matthew Pearce

What used to be one of the easiest ways to amass a large following, podcasting has become more challenging than ever, as there are now over 850,000 active podcasts publishing every single week! Ten years ago, we could predictably help podcasts rank in the top ten in their respective categories. Today that has become much more difficult as significant name brand networks have crowded the podcasting space.

But that doesn’t mean you should give up. If you have a good story to tell and can be dedicated to putting in the time to create a great podcast, you still have an excellent opportunity to tell your story if you do everything right.

Here are some tips to get you started on the right foot:

Choose a Discoverable Podcast Name

For some people, coming up with a podcast name is the most fun part of starting a podcast. You might think cute and catchy is where it’s at, but in reality, you want Google and the searching apps to be able to find you easily. With 850,000 podcasts to wade through, you need to be clear on what your podcast is about just from the title alone.

Add keywords in your Podcast Description

A little SEO know-how can go a long way in helping people find your podcast. The description should be keyword-rich, telling the audience what your show is all about in a way you think the average person would search. Take a little time looking at Google analytics to see search volume for keywords and topics. This will help you create content that people want to hear.

Create Helpful Episode Titles & Episode Descriptions

So we shouldn’t have to tell you that a title like “Episode One” isn’t a good place to start. As we already reiterated, there is a lot of competition for your listeners’ ears, do your darndest to get them to click on your podcast should they stumble access you. Think about what would make a listener click through and listen? What would make you want to listen to a show for the first time?

Distribute Your Show on Multiple Podcast Apps

If you want to have your podcast found and downloaded, you’ve got to make it available in as many places as possible. It’s not that challenging to syndicate your podcast using your RSS feed. This small investment in researching directories and following up to ensure your feed was accepted can pay off.

Consider YouTube

We don’t want to discourage you from making great podcasting content, but the reality is there is more that we can do to support your content efforts on YouTube than we can as an audio-only podcast. With YouTube, we can more easily drive views and feed the YouTube algorithm what it wants, helping you get your content noticed and ranking. The good news is that it is not that difficult to convert your great audio content into a video suitable for YouTube!  YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world. Ultimately, you may find even more success by repurposing your audio podcast into video content.  Ask us how.
